Get off your backside and do something! 2

As voted for by Maddie and Dianne in my original post I am naming this post the “Get off your backside and do something” list. (GOYBADS ?!)

To save you having to read the original post, I decided that rather than have a New Year Resolution that I would not bother to keep, I would have a monthly To Do list and see how long that lasted.

I have to say, so far it has been pretty darn motivating. In the last week or so I have

  • organised photo albums of the wedding, honeymoon and family for the last year;
  • filled the photo frames AND (and this is even more impressive) got Mr G to get them up on the wall in the same weekend! Never underestimate the power of a good nagging.
  • filled that scrap book with the items we collected on our honeymoon in Sri Lanka;

However, I did notice that whilst I spent the hours choosing photos and arranging albums I did not get to play with the kids or relax with the husband over the weekend. Something has to give – it seems it is always a choice between work or play, prioritising one job over the over.

Now I have the day to myself I have another choice. Coursework or paying work, blogging or job hunting.

So I am adding something else to my January GOYBADS list – to start noting down the time I spend on different tasks in the day and see where my life is going.

There are Resolutions and then there is Reality

I wrote briefly about New Year Resolutions for the Weekly Challenge and stated the usual aspirations to spend time with my children, eat healthily and  . . . oh some other such promise to the world that I will no doubt fail to keep. After all, I made the same promises last year and no doubt the year before that. My never ending quest to be thinner has been chronicled in various posts about diets, the mandatory guilt I feel as a parent has been referenced in my promises to be a better mother, I even went so far as to make some September Resolutions.

But let’s face it, we all make resolutions at New Year and we rarely actually keep them. After all, if we did we would end up as perfect human beings by the time we hit fifty. And who wants perfection – it’s so boring, darling.

However, what I am going to make is a monthly To Do list (haha, we will see how long this one lasts) of realistic aims that I want to accomplish. Now – what to call this? We need a catchy title here that will spur me on?

Hmm- the name can come later. Suggestions welcome.

 

So – here are Januarys aims

1. Pick the photos from the wedding to go in the album – it was in March for goodness sake

2. Select photos of family and holidays to go in the numerous empty frames on the wall – the house looks freaky!

3. Complete the scrap book from the wedding so that the box can get put away

4. Do the next module in the course! There is a weekly reminder on your phone, read it!

 

I think that’s enough for one month – don’t you?

 

So, do you agree? A To Do list is much more realistic than a Resolution and may actually get finished? Who wants to join me? If you had to make a list of things to finish this month, what would it be?

Doompocalypse Redux – DP Challenge

I liked the title, so I stole it.

So the weekly word press challenge is to write about the three most determined changes I want to make to my life and promise sincerely to do each and every one before the world explodes into a cloud of life ending debris in three months time. (A fictional end to the world, in case you were mid heart attack. I do not have foreknowledge or a freaky ancient calendar or mystical abilities.)

I would question here whether, knowing I had three months in which to complete these determined resolutions, I would choose the same three (what is it with that number today) as I would if the world were not ending.

Let’s see – scenario 1. The world is ending in three months.

Resolution 1 – Grab the kids, kidnap the hubbie, spend every moment together doing something fun. Play.

Resolution 2 – Research new recipes, experiment with fabulous new foods, test out tastes never previously explored. Eat.

Resolution 3 – Explore, visit new places, do new activities. Experience.

 

Of course, realistically if the world was ending most everyone would be doing the same. Quitting work, being with their families. Shops would run out of food in days as people panicked and stockpiled. Chaos would ensue. Still, that was not the point of the challenge. I digress.

 

Scenario 2 – Reality. My three resolutions for this year.

Resolution 1 – Play with the kids. Spend time with them playing and concentrate more on their school work. Time with children is more important than a clean house. I will have to control my OCD.

Resolution 2 – Cook proper healthy family meals instead of rushing something last minute. Try new recipes. Get my son eating something other than peas and cereal.

Resolution 3 – Finish my course, get on with my career. Find a path.

 

Not so far off the mark then. World ending or not, it seems family and food are top of my priorities this year.

Bucket List Update – November 2012

In September I made a bucket list of resolutions. This is just a brief look back to see what I have achieved so far.

 

The dreaded diet – well, it’s ongoing. I am back on the Cambridge Diet and I am past the nasty 3 day mark. Even though the weight is not yet dropping off I already feel healthier and fitter. I read an interesting blog earlier which implied that a ketosis based diet was good for the brain as the energy the body was producing passed from blood stream to brain easier that energy produced from carbohydrates and sugars. (I have probably confused the science of it) I don’t know if tis is true or accurate but certainly I am more aware, more awake, on this diet.

If anyone knows whether this is scientifically correct, I would be interested to know more?

 

In addition, it is now 61 days since my last cigarette. Not a huge number, but I am pleased.

 

I am writing more and more and contributing to my blog. Whether it goes well or not is probably down to you, the reader, to decide. But I am writing and that was the aim.

 

Just a few more things to work on then before it’s time to think about New Year resolutions. If I choose to make any, that is.

September Resolutions

September Resolutions – a phrase a friend used and I have shamelessly stolen! We all know what New Year Resolutions are. But did you know that there is another point in the year when we get the feeling it’s time to re-assess and make new promises to ourselves.

The summer is over – we have hopefully seen the sun, had BBQ’s, eaten pounds of overcooked meat smothered in sauces and wrapped in sesame covered buns, with a small side order of salad to keep in the vitamin quotient. We have sat out late into the warm, hazy evenings drinking wine and Pimm’s. We have excused the months of excess by stating that it’s the summer, it’s holiday season. And after all, we have been zealously dieting in preparation for this time ever since we made that resolution in the New Year!

September is here. The kids are returning to school and that feels like the start of a whole new season. There is a sense of order returning, back to routine and – for us parents – some relief. And as it is a new year in a sense, it’s time to make our September Resolutions.

 

So – on my list (the rough draft, to which I may yet add some)

1. Yes, it’s back on the diet, since a sneaky 8 pounds got back here since March and is just refusing to budge

2. Giving up smoking – again.

3. Adding to my blog, at least weekly, if not more.

4. Getting down to the business of self-employment.

5. Finishing that coursework.

6. Going swimming with the kids at least once a fortnight.

7. Go off-road jeep driving for a day

 

Yes, it’s a little mundane. But right now, these are the priorities in my life. Maybe once I know I can finish the little things, I can tackle the big ambitions!
